What is CiviCRM
The official description of CiviCRM from the About page on the CiviCRM site is:
CiviCRM is an open source project that produces software for nonprofit and civic sector organizations. CiviCRM, the software, is a web-based, highly customizable CRM released under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 (GNU AGPL v3). CiviCRM is used by a diverse range of organizations around the world and translated into dozens of languages.
CiviCRM runs within WordPress, Drupal and Joomla and we support all three. CiviCRM also has a set of extensions to add additional functionality — see the Extensions Directory for more details. There are also Drupal modules that work with CiviCRM providing extra integration.
For new sites, we generally recommend WordPress. For more complicated situations, there are additional tools that are available only in Drupal, so depending on your needs, we might recommend Drupal for you as well.
